You're Not Entitled to a "Living Wage"

Why the heck do we need a minimum wage in the first place? Many will say it's not so much a minimum wage as it’s a “living wage”. That has to be my favorite term the liberal morons coin for the idea of being entitled to a specific wage for menial work. I get it that it can be hard to get by on low wages but nowhere else in the world does one have the upward mobility like we do here in America!

The libs like to compare us to countries in Europe where the citizens are coddled, “University” is paid for by the government and everyone lives happily ever after. That couldn't be further from the truth! How would you feel of at least half of your earnings were being assumed by your government? Would that strengthen your work ethic or would that lead you to be less motivated as you knew that half of what you are earning doing your job is being stolen from you.

Another aspect of the minimum wage debate that often times goes unnoticed is the FACT that minimum wage was NEVER intended to be a lifetime salary or was it intended to be a salary from which one could raise a family! I'm sorry but no one is entitled to have an income from which they can raise a family by way of those who are working harder and longer hours and barely making ends meet! It's not the responsibility of others to provide economic stability for those who make poor life choices. Additionally, minimum wage is designed to be a stepping stone. If someone were to begin a job at minimum wage they have more opportunity here than anywhere else in the world to work past that starting salary and really earn a decent living so long as they apply themselves!

The mandated increase in minimum wage throughout the country is already have negative consequences especially for small business owners!

According to The Daily Signal,

After more than a decade at the helm of her bookstore, Ann Kinner faces an uncertain future because of new measures at the city and state level to raise the minimum wage.

On June 7, San Diego residents will vote on a ballot measure to raise the city’s minimum wage to $11.50 an hour in 2017.

This is just one of the many horror stories that we are seeing come from the proposed minimum wage increases around the country. What people fail to understand is that just because government mandates a higher wage doesn't mean small businesses can afford to pay that to their employees said wage. Maybe of the government got off of the backs of small business owners and reduced regulations and taxes levied apon them they'd have the resources to organically pay their employees more without the need for a government mandated wage altogether!

The Daily Signal goes on to explain,

Over the last few years, the store owner has reduced her number of employees, lessened her business hours, and cut her own salary to keep up with increased labor costs.

“I just want to survive,” she told The Daily Signal.

The ridiculous mandates being passed down from local and state municipalities are putting small business owners in a dire predicament. They are being forced to choose between the very survival of their business and the hiring and firing of employees!

Why Minimum Wage Increase is a JOKE!

Since when was a minimum wage job supposed to be a career? Simple answer it was never intended to be such. A minimum wage job is designed to be a stepping stone to a better job, a pathway to management, an arena to get the experience you need to progress to a career oriented job!

We are seeing the cry for increased minimum wage all over the country and we are also seeing the side effects of such acts. It's all fine and great to mandate that workers receive increased pay but politicians and liberal morons alike both fail to realize the real consequences. First and foremost increased wages will inevitably result in increased cost of good and services. It's really quite simple, if the owner of an establishment must pay more to staff his business he will in effect pass that cost on to the end user aka the customer. Another major side effect is reduced number of jobs and hours. Employers will simply cut back on the number of people they hire and in many cases adopt automating their business processes wherever they can.

One other aspect of increased minimum wage that often times goes unaddressed is the pay equality. If someone flipping burgers all of the sudden receives what amounts to a pay increase of roughly 30% what happens to the rest of us? Do we also receive a pay increase to offset the increased cost of good and services the increased minimum wage is causing? How is it that a job that requires no skill such as flipping burgers is all of the sudden on par with what a police officer or teacher makes?

According to ABC 7 News,

Many fast-food workers say their industry should pay a minimum wage of $15 an hour so workers can afford the high cost of living in New York City and elsewhere. Jorel Ware, 34, works at a McDonalds in the Bronx where he is paid the minimum wage. He makes ends meet thanks to support from his mother. A $15 wage, he said, would transform his life and the lives of thousands of New Yorkers.

An increase in the minimum wage in a city like New York would only increase the cost of living. They will start with those in fast food restaurants and then it will move into retail because these working in retail will feel "discriminated against" and eventually no one will be allowed to make less than $15 an hour! When this occurs it will wreak havoc on the economy of NYC as it will no longer be profitable for businesses to exist there. Just look around the country at other cities that have attempted to institute a minimum wage like $15 an hour.

According to the Washington Policy Center,

As the implementation date for Seattle’s strict $15 per hour minimum wage law approaches, the city is experiencing a rising trend in restaurant closures.  The tough new law goes into effect April 1st.

The closings have occurred across the city, from Grub in the upscale Queen Anne Hill neighborhood, to Little Uncle in gritty Pioneer Square, to the Boat Street Cafe on Western Avenue near the waterfront.

The shut-downs have idled dozens of low-wage workers, the very people advocates say the wage law is supposed to help.  Instead of delivering the promised “living wage” of $15 an hour, economic realities created by the new law have dropped the hourly wage for these workers to zero.

So there you have it! The mandatory minimum wage law at work and destroying businesses and low wage workers lives in Seattle! It's really not hard to understand the negative effect a mandatory minimum wage will have on a city! When the price of labor went up in Seattle what did business owners do? - they laid off workers. So the bottom line is this, would you rather make some money rather than no money at all? All a minimum wage increase in NYC will do is increase both the welfare state and crime as the inevitable layoffs will leave people with empty pockets and no jobs!

The Progressive Minimum Wage Hike Backfires in Suburban Seattle Town

Since the 1930's progressives in this country have waged a war on the worker. As with nearly all progressive policies, the institution of the minimum wage has lead this country on a path to destruction.  Fast forward to present day and it's easy to see the idea of minimum wage has taken on a mind of it's own. When minimum wage was conceived it was designed to be a stepping stone to a better paying job not a salary to support a family.

We see the effects of an increased minimum wage on a small suburban town right outside of Seattle called SeaTac.  At the beginning of the year it was decided that minimum wage in this town would be raised to $15 an hour.  

This wage hike was initially met with applause and adulation as many thought it would bring more jobs to town and put more money in people's pockets. Little did they realize it may put more money in people's pockets but there are less pockets being filled as many businesses proceeded to lay off workers, cut back on benefits, and raise the prices of the goods and services they offer.

As reported in the Seattle Times the $15 minimum wage floor will inevitably have "some casualties" as  "unskilled workers are going to have a harder time finding jobs" and workers who manage to find work will "have to go the extra distance" to earn their $15 wage.

According to WashingtonPolicy.org small businesses are another area hard hit by the increased minimum wage.  Many small business owners operate on a very limited budget. As a result, they have little to offer prospective employees when the start out.  This increased minimum wage will inevitably make it that much harder for new businesses to take root in SeaTac. When an individual is brought on to fill an entry level position with limited responsibilities most businesses do not see fit to pay that employee upwards of $15 an hour.

With the increased wage floor created by the minimum wage hike comes the need to pay higher skilled employees in proportion to the lower skilled wage earners. If one individual is starting out at $15 an hour and another employee has been there for an extended period of time only earning roughly $17 an hour that hardly seems fair.  After all isn't the minimum wage increase designed to ensure everyone earns a "living wage". Why should a worker who is starting out earn nearly as much as a higher skilled senior level employee?

It has become quite obvious that the negative effects of increasing the minimum wage far outweigh any "possible" positive outcomes. Capitalism and the laws of supply and demand should determine wages. It is not the government's responsibility to determine how much an individual should be making, if one wants to earn a higher salary simply work harder and smarter. There are still far more opportunities in this country than any other country in the world if you are simply willing to pay the price.
